Activity series III

Periodic table contains hundreds elements. Out of these elements some are very reactive compared to some which are completely unreactive. A chemical activity series is a tool that is used to check t he reactivity of an element. In order to write a single of double displacement reaction consultation with this activity series becomes a necessity.

It is a list of substances ranked in order of relative reactivity. A replacement reaction takes place when one metal replaces the other in its aqueous solution. For example magnesium metal can knock hydrogen ions out of solution, so it is considered more reactive than elemental hydrogen. Also Zinc can also displace hydrogen ions from solution, so zinc is also more active than hydrogen. But magnesium metal can remove zinc ions from solution:

To write this chemical activity-series a rule is generally followed in deciding which metal can replace the one already present in an aqueous solution. This can be put in the form of a Table called Activity-Series.
This Series consists of a list of elements which are organized according to their ability to react of according to their reactivity.

Activity Series Table

Activity series of metal chart consists of group of metallic elements listed in order with the most reactive metals at the top and non-reactive metals at the bottom. This arrangement of metals in order of decreasing ease of oxidation is called reactivity-series.
In this table the metals at the top of the table are most easily oxidized to say they react most readily to form compounds. Hydrogen is also included in this table. The active metals that is the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals are at the top. The metals at the bottom of the of the activity-series table are very stable and form compounds less readily.
The reactivity-series could be used for predicting a outcome of chemical changes between metals, metal salts or acids. Any metal that are there on the list could be oxidized by the ions of the elements present below it. In the reactivity-series list the copper is above silver and so copper could be easily oxidized by silver ions.


Non Metal Activity Series

Comparing the reactivity of metals with that of Non metals the non metals are not regular in reactivity Each group in the periodic table the metallic character increases as we move down that group . Example: Group 13 starts with a non-metal, Boron, while all the other elements in this group are metals. Boron is reactive, as a non metal. Nitrogen in group 15 is not very reactive while phosphorous exhibits many allotropes and is reactive.
