Introduction

Let us see about potassium bromide acid. The metal itself has few uses, but potassium compounds are of great importance in agriculture as fertilizers. Plants take up potassium ions from the soil during growth and these have to be restoring if soil fertility is to be maintained. Here we will see about compounds.

Compounds

In common potassium compounds closely resemble those of sodium, but they tend to be less soluble in water, less commonly hydrated as crystals, and less commonly hydrated as crystals, and less frequently hygroscopic. In the laboratory, potassium compounds are only favored to their cheaper sodium counterparts when they offer some specific advantage.

Potassium Bromide Acid

This acid is manufactured by treating iron filings with bromine and water and boiling the product with potassium carbonate.

3Fe+4Br2 = Fe3Br8

Fe3Br8+4K2CO3=Fe3O4↓8KBr+4CO2

The iron oxide is filtered off and the potassium bromide acid is crystallized from the filtrate.It can as well as organized by the action of bromine on hot potassium hydroxide solution.

3Br2+6KOH= 5KBr+KBrO3+3H2O

Properties

  • White is the color of potassium bromium.
  • m.p 750° C which is very soluble in water and give the usual reactions of bromides.

Uses

  • It is used commercially as a calming.
  • In photography in the laboratory it is valuable as a source of bromides.

Potassium Iodide

It is organized by methods corresponding to those used to make potassium bromide acid. It forms white crystals, m.p. 680 C which is very soluble in water and give the typical reactions of iodides. For example, potassium iodide solution rapid iodies from solutions of many metallic salts.

The mercuric iodide dissolves in excess, forming a complex ion.Made alkaline with sodium hydroxide solution, this is known as Nessler’s reagent. It is used to notice traces of ammonia, with which it gives a yellow color.

Iodine readily in potassium iodide solution, forming potassium tri-iodide. An acidified solution of potassium iodide is much used in the laboratory for detecting and approximation oxidizing agents.
