Introduction to methane

Methane is a simple aldehyde represented by CH4, which is same as methane or natural gas. Somewhere between 1776 and 1778, methane was invented by Alessandro Volta while he was pursuing his education at Lake Maggiore. It is also known by the name of marsh gas.

Properties of methane boiling point:

  • It has a density of 0.717 kg/m3.
  • It has a molecular weight of 16.043 g/mol.
  •  Its boiling point is -161.6 degree Celsius.
  • It is a colorless gas, which is also odorless and flammable.
  • Formaldehyde is formed when methane undergoes combustion with help of oxygen. Post a reaction it forms water, hydrogen and carbon monoxide.

  • Methane reacts with halides in the following ways:

CH4 + X2 = CH3X + HX,        where X can be any halide like chlorine, bromine etc….

  • In liquid phase, it has a liquid density (1.013 bars at boiling point) of 422.62 kg/m3. 630 vol/vol is the liquid/gas ratio at a pressure of 1.013 bar and a temperature of 15 °C.
  • At a pressure of 1.013 bar, its boiling point is bound to be -161.6 °C. 510 kJ/kg is the latent heat of vaporization at a pressure of 1.013 bar at boiling point.
  • Critical temperature and critical pressure are 82.7 °C and 45.96 bar respectively.
  • Methane burns only at high pressure.
  • Methane gas does not dissolve in water but found to be soluble in solvents like alcohol
  • It is said to be a nonpolar molecule.
  • Methane as a gas has a vast and varied application, it us used as a fuel for industries and for vehicles.

Conclusion on methane boiling point:

Methane reacts with chlorine, fluorine and with others it is not reactive. Methane gas burns with a bluish flame. Considerable amount of heat is produced when methane gas undergoes combustion. This helps in using methane as a fuel.
