Potassium formate is the potassium salt of formic acid having chemical formula HCCOK. When potassium is produced by the formate potash process, potassium formate synthesizes as an intermediate product.

Potassium formate is the potassium salt of formic acid having chemical formula HCCOK. When potassium is produced by the formate potash process, potassium formate synthesizes as an intermediate product.

Physical and Chemical Properties:

The appearance of this solution is clear to amber liquid whose specific gravity is about 1.53-1.57.

Potassium formate is highly soluble in water. The pH of HCCOK is 10.5-11.5.

Production of potassium formate:

In the formaldehyde production plants, the formaldehyde present in the reactor outlet gas reacts with the aqueous solution of KOH (potassium hydroxide) and forms the potassium formate as a product. This is a straightforward method in which excess amount of reactants are removed out very efficiently. At any strength, potassium formate in the pure form is produced. The reaction is as follows:

HCHO + KOH   HCOOK + CH3OH

The main disadvantage of this reaction is:

  1. A large amount of energy is consumed for the evaporation of water which comes with the solution of formaldehyde.
  2. Reaction rate is not fast.
  3. After the distillation process of products, methanol is obtained which creates the problem of transportation and storage.

Applications of Potassium Formate Formula:

    • Potassium formate has the tendency to exchange its potassium ions with clays and shales in order to slow down their reactivity and give to improved hole stability. Before the addition of potassium formate, starches and polymers should be pre-hydrated. HCCOK provides temperature and biostability at high concentrations to polymers and starches.

 

  • If the concentration of potassium formate is greater than 40%, Barite (barium sulphate) becomes soluble. In these conditions, we use CaCO3 for increasing density.
  • Potassium formate is utilized in heat transfer, oil industry and de-icing. It is a salt of formic acid which is non-toxic. The water solutions have a low freezing point as well as high density.
  • If the potassium formate decomposes in the environment, it gives water, carbon dioxide and other potassium salts of more stability.
  • In water, potassium formate is found as a 50% solution.
