It is used as principle antimicrobial and antifungal preservatives. Industrially, it is used as a anti-fermentation additives and tabletting lubricant for pharmaceuticals. Benzoic acid in its pure form exists as white crystalline, colorless solid needles with strong characteristic odour. It is used as food preservatives. It is an important precursor for most of the organic substances. It occurs naturally in some resins (gum benzoin). It was discovered in the 16th century and described by Nostradamus and further by Alexius Pedemontanus and Blaise.

It is mainly used in food preservatives and it can also used in cough syrups like Robitussin.
